Abingdon is located in Washington County, Virginia. It has an estimated population of 8,191 people with a total area of 8.3 square miles. Abingdon was once the territory of indigenous people. The town now encompasses several historically significant sites and features a fine arts and crafts scene centered on the galleries and museums along Main street.

Abingdon Resources:

William King Museum of Art– The William King Museum of Art leads the region as the premier visual arts facility, offering outstanding fine world art, contemporary regional art and cultural heritage exhibits that change frequently, giving visitors a new experience each time they walk through our doors.

Barter Theater– Barter Theatre, located in Abingdon, Virginia, opened on June 10, 1933 making it the nation’s longest running professional theatre. In 1933, when the country was in the middle of The Great Depression, spare money for a theatre ticket was not easy to come by. Robert Porterfield, founder of the theatre, offered a unique solution to allow locals to attend shows. Rather than traditional money, patrons could pay for admission to the theatre by bartering food, livestock or other goods.

Abingdon Muster Grounds– In the summer of 1780, the Southern American colonies – and hopes of independence – seemed at the mercy of an invading British army. A militia was formed on the western frontier, known as the Overmountain Men. This brave group of some 400 volunteers came to the Abingdon Muster Grounds to begin their journey. The Muster Grounds is the northern trailhead of the 330-mile long Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.
